Dianne Patrice Durham was an American artistic gymnast. In 1983, she won the all-around senior title at the women’s US National Championships. She became the first African American athlete to achieve this. She was Béla and Márta Károlyis first elite athlete in the United States. She trained with Mary Lou Retton, who called Durham her “best competition”. In 2015, Durham was inducted into the Indiana Gymnastics Hall of Fame. She entered the Gymnastics Regional Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2021, she was posthumously honored in the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. After leaving competition in 1985, She became a coach both for the Karolyis and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also became a gymnastics Judge and motivational speaker. Durham owned and operated the Skyline Gym on Chicago’s North side for seventeen years. Durham is a source of inspiration. She paved the way for Black gymnasts like Simone Biles, Betty Okino and Gabby Douglas.
