Maggie Lena Walker, born Magge Lena Mitchell was an African American businesswoman, teacher, and activist for women’s rights. She was a member of the National Association of Colored Women and Deputy-President of the NAACP, Richmond Chapter. Walker started a newspaper in 1902 called the “St. Luke Herald”. After the success of the newspaper, she started the “St. Luke Penny Savings Bank” and became the first woman in the United States to charter a bank. She was also the bank’s first president. Walker was a great leader. She had the vision to make efforts to improve the lives of women and African Americans.
