Mary Church Terrell came from an affluent family. She was light skinned enough to “pass” as a white person had she chosen. Instead, she placed herself squarely in the struggle for African Empowerment. Throughout her long life as a writer, activist, and lecturer, Terrell was a powerful advocate for racial justice. She also fought for women’s rights in America and abroad.

Mary White Ovington (1865-1951) was a journalist and social worker. She believed passionately in racial equality. She was a co-founder of the NAACP.
