Clementine Hunter

Cloutierville, Louisiana (c 1887- January 1, 1988) age ~101 yrs

Clementine Hunter was a self-taught Black folk artist from the Cane River region of Louisiana. She lived and worked on Melrose Plantation. Hunter painted at night, after working all day in the plantation house. She used whatever surfaces she found. She drew and painted on canvas, wood, and gourds. Her artworks were also on paper, snuff boxes, and iron pots. She even used cutting boards and plastic milk jugs. She is the first African American artist to have a solo exhibition at the current New Orleans Museum of Art.
