Hattie McDaniel was best known for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role. Hattie McDaniel was also a professional singer-songwriter, comedian, stage actress, radio performer, and television star.  Born in Wichita, Kansas, McDaniel was the first African American to win an Academy Award.  In 1975, she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. She also has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Hattie McDaniel appeared in over 300 films in her career. She also served as chairman of the “Negro Division” of the Hollywood Victory Committee. This committee provided soldiers with entertainment stationed at military bases during World War II.
