Louise Little was born Louise Helen Norton Langdon. She was the wife of Earl Little and mother of 8 children, including Malcolm Little (Malcolm X). She was a committed Garveyite grassroots activist and a brilliant, dynamic woman. Louise spoke multiple languages. She was the secretary and “branch reporter” of the UNIA’s (United Negro Improvement Association) local chapter in Omaha, Nebraska. She sent news of local UNIA activities to Negro World, the official periodical of UNIA. Ms. Little was institutionalized at the Kalamazoo Mental Hospital from 1939 through 1963. In 1963 her grown children arranged for her release. “When she stood up, she rose up. The institution did not take that away from her. She instilled that in her children,” said granddaughter, Deborah Jones of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
