Marjorie Stewart Joyner businesswoman, hair care entrepreneur, philanthropist, educator, activist and inventor of “A Permanent Hair-wave Machine”. The Hair Wave machine is a device that can set an entire head of curls at one time. Stewart perfected her invention and applied for and received her patent in 1928. Her design was popular in salons with both African American and white women. Joyner worked for Madame C.J. Walker’s company when the invention was created and patented. Thus, the Walker Company owned the patents. When others asked her how she came up with the idea, Joyner was always very humble about it. “If I can take pot roast rods and create a one-of-a-kind invention, you can believe it. People can do what they set their minds to.”
