Loretta Mary Aiken was known by her stage name, Jackie “Moms” Mabley. She was a trailblazing African American comedian and actress. She was known for warm yet raunchy stand-up routines. Mabley began her career on the theater stage in the 1920s. She became a veteran entertainer of the Chitlin’ Circuit of African American vaudeville. She went on to become an internationally known entertainer whose career spanned five decades. She worked with several celebrities. She co-starred in Emperor Jones alongside actor Paul Robeson. By the end of the decade, she became the first female comedian to carry out at the Apollo Theater. By the 1950s, Mabley earned $10,000 a week at the Apollo. This made her one of the most highly paid performers of that era. She performed at the Apollo more than any other entertainers in the history of theater. In 2015, Mabley, Richard Pryor, and Redd Foxx were inducted into the Apollo Walk of Fame. This event marked the first time non-musical artists were bestowed with the honor.
