Sylura Richardson Barron was an African American political activist in San Diego, California from the 1940s into the 1990s. In 1948, she marked a historic milestone. She became the first Black woman to be a delegate at a national political convention in the United States. She represented California at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. She was president of the Negro Woman’s Republican Educational League. She also was president of the National Negro Day Committee. Additionally, she was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she sometimes played the organ. Barran had significant national influence. She ran for San Diego City Council in 1951. She served as president of San Diego’s John F. Kennedy Democratic Club in 1960 and as vice president of the newly founded club, Democratic Women Power, in 1972. Barron remained active in local events well into her 90s. Sylura Barron passed away in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of leadership.
