Jean Blackwell Hutson was an American librarian, archivist, writer, and curator. She was also an educator and later became chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The Schomburg Center dedicated their Research and Reference Division in honor of Ms. Hutson. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she applied to Enoch Pratt Library Training School but was not admitted. Hutson brought a lawsuit against Enoch Pratt. She ultimately won the case. She believed she was denied entrance as an African American because of her race. Ms. Hutson eventually received her master’s degree in library science in 1936 and her teaching certificate from Columbia University in 1941.
