Anna Pauline “Pauli” Murray was an American activist, lawyer, poet, educator, and author. She was also the first Black woman ordained an Episcopal priest. At hunter College in New York City, she was one of four Blacks in a class of 247 students. She overcame every obstacle and graduated with distinction. Murray believed that racial and gender equality were hidden in the promise of law. She went on to Harvard University Law School. She describes her life struggle in her book ‘Song in a Weary Throat: An American Pilgrimage’.
