Lena Horne, jazz and pop music singer, dancer, actress, and civil rights activist. Horne’s career spanned over 70 years appearing in film, television, and theater. She began her career at the famed Cotton Club in Harlem. She later moved to the West Coast. There, she signed a long-term Hollywood contract with MGM. She starred in several movies, including Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. Horne received a Special Tony Award for her 1981 solo show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. She also received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Musical for the same show.
