Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old Black mother and sharecropper, was abducted walking home from church in Asheville, Alabama. She was gang raped by six white men on September 3, 1944. NAACP activist Rosa Parks investigated the crime. It garnered extensive coverage in the Black press. Nevertheless, the accused were never indicted. Despite the men’s confessions to authorities, two grand juries later declined to indict the men. No charges were ever brought against her assailants. In 2011, the Alabama Legislature officially apologized on behalf of the state or its failure to prosecute her attackers.
