Audrey ‘Mickey’ Patterson-Tyler was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic medal. She won a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. In 1964 Patterson-Tyler settled in San Diego, Ca. The next year, she established “Mickey’s Missiles.” It was a track club for children ages six to eighteen. The club produced at least two future Olympians, Jackie Thompson and Dennis Mitchell. It is estimated that she coached more than 5,000 children through this program. She was a noted community leader. She was recognized by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women. She was named Woman of the Year by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). She also received this honor from the city of San Diego and the Press Club of San Diego.
