Caroline Baker Allen graduated from Huston-Tillotson College in 1946 and moved to Okaloosa County, Florida with her husband, Samuel A. Allen where they began their teaching careers. Carolyn began her teaching career at Drew High School. In 1954, she was transferred to Carver Hill School. There, she taught English and business classes. She dedicated her life to the preservation of local history. From 1968 to 1979, she was the head of the Business Department at Crestview High School. After retiring from the Okaloosa County School Board, Mrs. Allen served the Crestview Chamber of Commerce. She also served the Arts Council and the NAACP. Her contributions extended to the Eglin Air Force Base African American Committee and the Okaloosa County Library Focus Group. In the 1970s she convinced the school district to convert the Carver Hill School’s lunchroom into the Carver Hill Museum. Mrs. Allen died in a car accident in 2005. It was a terrible shock to the community. Her life was well lived. It serves as an example to all. Even in death, she leaves optimism that we can better our lives and our world.
