Ruby Dee, born Ruby Ann Wallace, was an American actress, poet, playwright, screen writer, journalist, and civil rights activist. Dee appeared on Broadway in Jeb, a play by the actor and writer Ossie Davis. She and Davis married in 1948. Dee and Davis were longtime civil rights activists. They served as masters of ceremony at the March on Washington. This event is where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I have a Dream” speech.
