Tchaiko Ruramai Kwayana, born Ann Cook, educator, author, Pan-Africanist, and civil rights activist. She graduated from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. She also attended Teachers College at Columbia University. Additionally, she is a doctoral student in African Studies at Union Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio. She taught English at the high school and college levels in three continents. She worked in Nigeria, Africa, and in Guyana, South America. She also taught on both the east and west coasts of the USA. In San Diego, she taught high school. She also taught English as a Second Language at Southwestern College. Additionally, she taught History and English from a Black Perspective at Mesa College. She co-authored the book ‘Scars of Bondage: A First Look at the Slave Colonial Experience of the Africans in Guyana.’ She wrote it with Eusi Kwayana. He was her partner for 46 years. She also wrote ‘Black Pride? Some Contradictions’. Tchaiko Kwayana made history. She became the first African American teacher in California to be a Nationally Board-Certified Teacher of English.
