Alice Coltrane, born Alice Lucille McLeod, was a jazz performer, composer, and wife of saxophone legend John Coltrane. She began learning classical piano at age 7. Coltrane spent her youth exploring a range of musical influences including classical, bebop, and gospel styles. Her talent was quickly noticeable. Among her early teachers were noted jazz pianist Barry Harris and Terry Pollard. At the piano, she brought a unique style, and impressed her early colleagues. When Terry Gibbs, an American vibraphonist, met her, he instantly hired her on the spot. Alice Coltrane played both piano and organ. She was noted for her astral compositions. She also brought the harp onto the jazz bandstand. For nearly 40 years, Coltrane managed the archive. She also managed the estate of her husband. He was a pivotal figure in the history of Jazz.
