Geneva Evens was a great labor leader. She was one of the first to respond to the call to organize a union. This was at her non-profit home health care agency, the Council of Elders, in 1981. Geneva was a leader in the campaign to demand a union. She later led the National Labor Board (NLRB) election campaign. In this campaign, all but 5 of her 250 co-workers voted for ULU (United Labor Unions) Local 1475. This was a small national union. ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) founded it to organize low-wage workers. These included home care workers, whom others thought could not be organized. Evans served on the negotiating committee and helped reach the first-ever contract for home care workers in Massachusetts. Evans participated in helping to win similar agreements in other agencies in quick succession. She notably supported the 500 workers at Suburban Homemaking and Maternity. They waged an historic three-week strike for their first contract. It was one of the first home care workers strikes in Massachusetts. She became the president of the independent Local 1475. Later, it merged into SEIU Local 285. There, she served on the Executive Board. Then she joined the 1199 United Healthcare Workers.
