Mary Burnett Talbert, was an educator, suffragist, anti-lynching, civil, and Human rights activist. Talbert received her college degree from Oberlin. She accepted a position as a high school teacher in Little Rock, Arkansas. There she taught science, history, math, and Latin. Later, she taught at Bethel University. She married William H. Talbert in 1891 and moved to Buffalo, New York, where she joined Buffalo’s historic Michigan Avenue Baptist Church. Talbert was instrumental in the founding of the Niagara Movement, pre-cursor to the NAACP in 1905. Talbert was a pioneer in international organizing efforts, gaining a voice for Black women and developing Black female leadership. In 2005, Talbert was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
