Annie Lou McPheeters was a prominent civil rights activist. She was one of the first African American professional librarians in the Atlanta Public Library. She played a significant role in promoting African American culture and history. McPheeters is notably recognized for initiating the Negro History Collection at the Auburn Carnegie Library in Atlanta, Georgia. In her honor, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System named the Washington Park/Annie L. McPheeters Branch Library. In 1936, she assumed the position of librarian at the Auburn Library in Atlanta. There, she established the Negro History Collection. She also contributed to the development of educational programs. She engaged with library patrons like young Martin Luther King Jr. and Maynard Jackson. Furthermore, McPheeters actively advocated for the desegregation of libraries in Atlanta, a milestone that was finally accomplished in 1959.
