Betty Shabazz, born Betty Dean Sanders, also known as Betty X, was an American educator and civil rights advocate. She was the wife of Malcolm X. Shabazz grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where her foster parents largely sheltered her from racism. She attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where she had her first encounters with racism. Shabazz gave the keynote speech at the opening of the Malcolm X Library. The event was held at the Performing Arts Center in San Diego, California. This event took place on January 6, 1996. She expressed great pleasure that a library was named after Malcolm X. This happened nearly 31 years after his slaying in New York.
